What is Structural Glazing?

It is the windows that increase the elegant looks of buildings adding value to their beautiful structures. When we talk about windows, there are many types of Windows which serve multiple purposes besides making the looks of the building or the space elegant. Windows act as the display tool. Why use triple glazed windows? Triple Glazed windows are increasingly becoming popular among windows suppliers, especially those who deal with aluminium.

Infill panels are lightweight and usually glazed to give good internal natural day lighting conditions. Different from cladding wall because infill panels is fixing between structure in the framed structure.

The panel layout can be so arranged to expose some or all of the structural members creating various optical impressions. The design need infill panel walls are:. A wide variety of materials or combinations of materials can be employed such as timber, steel, aluminum and plastic. Double-glazing techniques can be used to achieve the desired sound or thermal insulation. The glazing module should be such that a reasonable thickness of glass can be specified.

Bolted and point-fixed glass systems

The jointing problem with infill panels occur mainly at its junction with the structural frame and allowance for moisture or thermal movement is usually achieved by using a suitable mastic or sealant. Masonry infill panels of contemporary cavity construction can be used to preserve traditional features and to attain high standards of sound and thermal insulation and fire protection.

Masonry walls are tied to the structural frame with wall ties cast into the concrete columns or with a purpose-made cladding support system. It should be noted that many of the essentially curtain-walling systems are adaptable as infill panels which gives the designer a wide range of systems from which to select the most suitable.

All buildings collect dirt, the effects of which can vary with the material: concrete and masonry tend to accept dirt and weather natural, whereas impervious materials such as metals and glass do not accept and can corrode or become less efficient. If glass is allowed to become coated with dirt its visual appearance is less acceptable, its optical performance lessens since clarity of vision is reduced and the useful penetration of natural daylight diminishes.

The number of times that cleaning will be necessary depends largely upon the area, ranging from three-monthly intervals in non-industrial areas to six-weekly intervals in areas with a high pollution factor. Access for cleaning glazed areas can be external or internal. Windows at ground level present no access problems and present only the question of choice of method such as hand cloths or telescopic poles with squeegee heads.

Low and medium-rise structures can be reached by ladders or a mobile scaffold tower and usually present very few problems. High-rise structures need careful consideration. External access to windows is gained by using a cradle suspended from roof level; this can be in the form of a temporary system consisting of counterweighted cantilevered beams from which the cradle is suspended.

Permanent systems, which are incorporated as part of the building design, are more efficient and consist of a track on which a mobile trolley is mounted and from which davit arms can be projected beyond the roof edge to support the cradle. Internal access for cleaning the external glass face can be achieved by using windows such as reversible sashes, horizontal and vertical sliding sashes, but the designer is restricted in his choice to the reach possible by the average person.

It cannot be overemphasized that such windows can be a very dangerous hazard unless carefully designed so that all parts of the glazed area can be reached by the person cleaning the windows while standing firmly on the floor. Needs a Topic. Wiki User Structural glass is glass which has gone through a manufacturing process to enable it to be used for structural elements of buildings. The resulting product enables walls, floors and ceilings in buildings to be transparent and can even be load bearing.

Structural glazing is made by "heating sheets of glass uniformly after manufacture until it is plastic and then rapid cooling with jets of air. The outer layers closest to the jets of air cool and solidify first; they contract as they cool. As the inner layers try to follow they throw the outer layers into compression.

Structural glazing takes the load of the building elements- you don't need an additional wall or column to support the building whereas curtain wall is only for the facade treatment: separate structural assembly should be provided on the inner side for taking the builiding load.

Double glazing does stop convection. Double glazing will stop the heat transfer that occurs through convection. Double glazing also helps to keep outdoor sounds from being heard inside. Asked in Physics How does the heat pass through double glazing?

Unitized Curtainwall Share this In strictest architectural parlance, a "curtainwall" is any non-load-bearing exterior wall that hangs like a curtain from the face of floor slabs, regardless of construction or cladding material.

However, in common usage, the term curtainwall usually refers to aluminum-framed systems carrying glass, panels, louvers, or occasionally, granite or marble.

These can be furnished by the manufacturer as "stock lengths" to be cut, machined, assembled, and sealed in the field, or as "knocked down" KD parts pre-machined in the factory, for field-assembly and -sealing only.

All stick curtainwalls are field-glazed. Frame assembly requires the use of either, a "shear blocks" to connect vertical and horizontal framing elements, or b "screw-spline" construction, in which assembly fasteners feed through holes in interlocking vertical stacking mullions into extruded races in horizontals.

Performance of any field-assembled or field-glazed curtainwall is only as good as field workmanship allows, limited by variables such as weather, access, and job site dirt and dust. Many critical seals are necessary, even in systems that are designed to drain or "weep" rain penetration from the system back to the exterior. To accomplish as many of these critical seals as possible in controlled factory conditions, and minimize dependence on scarce and expensive field labor, "unitized" curtainwall systems have been developed.

Unitized curtainwalls are factory-assembled and -glazed, then shipped to the job site in units that are typically one lite wide by one floor tall. Only one unit-to-unit splice usually a silicone sheet or patch needs to be field-sealed, and only one anchor per mullion needs to be attached to the face or top of the floor slab.

Interlocking unitized curtainwall frame members are weatheripped to seal to one another, both horizontally and vertically. Most unitized curtainwall systems are installed in a sequential manner around each floor level, moving from the bottom to the top of the building.

Many changes in plane, e. For buildings using curtainwall systems as design elements, it is important to consult with an experienced manufacturer early in the process. Teamed with a reputable, local glazing subcontractor, manufacturers can provide design input, budget pricing, sequencing, and schedule information that will prove invaluable to the design team. There are two main categories of curtain walls: unitized curtain walls and stick-built systems. So how do you know which one is right for your building?

Unitized curtain systems are composed of large glass units that are created and glazed within a factory and then sent to the construction site. Once on site, the units can then be hoisted onto anchors connected to the building. High quality, due to tight tolerances of fabrication in a climate-controlled environment, is only one hallmark of this type of system. Since there is no on-site glazing, another major benefit of using a unitized system is the speed of installation.

The system can be installed in a third of the time of a stick-built system. Most of the erection and glazing for a stick-built system is done on site.

One of the benefits of stick-built systems is its economic friendliness for facades that have lower required volumes and many complicated conditions. The lead times for these types of systems are often much shorter for fabricated materials to be delivered to the site and allow for less up front staging. This is shorter in comparison to a unitized system, where six months to a year can be required for this process. However, the trade-off is that the installation takes longer to complete on-site.

You also need a significant amount of space for installation and storage of material on the site, which can be difficult in many high-traffic cities with tight job sites. Thank you Shadman, M. Sc Construction Project Management Birmingham city university. What are your perspective about structural glazing? How you tackled with these problems? Hello Yara, Thanks for your inquiry. When choosing between stick and unitized construction it would depend on project size, locations, repetition, labor rates, site layout space, etc.

On the average, smaller projects tend to make more sense for stick curtain wall since the lead times are shorter and there are less expensive prefabbed pieces. For larger projects in major cities, unitized is now more or less the standard.
